We had 10 early birders help clean up Black Point Wildlife Drive, particularly at Stops #4 and #9. The good news was the Drive was fairly clean and we didn’t have a lot to pick up. The bad news is the waters were high so not as many birds as we hoped, particularly shorebirds. We did see 30 species, including a duck sp. that couldn’t be identified as they flew off in the distance. We had a great time and will likely repeat this event again in the future. The bird species we saw were:
- Blue-winged Teal
- Duck sp.
- Pied-billed Grebe
- Common Ground Dove
- Mourning Dove
- Common Gallinule
- Spotted Sandpiper
- Caspian Tern
- Anhinga
- Double-crested Cormorant
- Great Blue Heron
- Great Egret
- Snowy Egret
- Little Blue Heron
- Tricolored Heron
- Reddish Egret
- White Ibis
- Glossy Ibis
- Black Vulture
- Turkey Vulture
- Osprey
- Northern Harrier
- Belted Kingfisher
- Red-bellied Woodpecker
- Northern Flicker
- Merlin
- Blue Jay
- Barn Swallow
- Red-winged Blackbird
- Prairie Warbler
We saw the following five species at the Visitor Center before we headed out to Black Point Wildlife Drive:
- Red-bellied Woodpecker
- Pileated Woodpecker
- White-eyed Vireo
- American Redstart
- Northern Cardinal
